Tom Hanks-5-1024x767Hanks His next role was that of astronaut and commanding officer Jim Lovell in the 1995 docudrama Apollo 13. This reunited Hanks once more with Ron Howard. The film was generally praised by critics as well as the performances by the entire cast that included actors Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris and Kathleen Quinlan. The film also garnered nine Academy Award nominations, winning two. Hanks later starred as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animation film Toy Story (1995). His directorial debut came a year later in The Thing You Do! (1996) which follows the rise and fall of a 1960s-era pop group, also playing the role of a producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel called it "charming" and the majority of reviewers agree that Hanks performance earned him a spot among the top romantic-comedy stars in his generation.
